Thin Film Magnetic Eraser

Illustrated is a tooling device which is used to erase
all magnetic patterns stored on the surface of rigid magnetic thin
film disks.

Holder 1 (shown in Fig. 1) is made from a non-magnetic material
that is machined with a blind hole leaving approximately .007" left
at its base.  A neodymium iron boron magnet 2 is inserted and bonded
in the cavity.  Parts 1 and 2 are then coated entirely by a two-part
epoxy coating to ensure that there is no escape of magnetic
particles.

The assembly of 1 and 2 is made into sets, including the
magnets 2, with forces such that the fields of flux repel each other
in operation.  This assembly set is then mounted on the top and
bottom of a linear device 3 (shown in Fig. 2) which reciprocates over
the media surfaces, thereby causing the erasing feature to cover the
entire surface.
