Abstract

This article describes a mechanism for IBM's Document Interchange Architecture (DIA) Services whereby an enterprise can associate processes or events which, upon occurring, could signify that the document may be purged from storage. A mechanism is needed which permits different enterprises to identify a common frame of reference which defines events or processes which, upon occurring, signify that the document is permitted to be purged from storage. No mechanism currently exists in the DIA Services which defines a reference to events or processes which, upon occurring, permit the document to be purged.

Reference for Associating Multiple Events Which Permit a Document to Be Purged From Storage

This article describes a mechanism for IBM's Document
Interchange Architecture (DIA) Services whereby  an enterprise can
associate processes or events which, upon occurring, could signify
that the document may be purged from storage. A mechanism is needed
which permits different enterprises  to identify a common frame of
reference which defines events or processes which, upon occurring,
signify that the document is permitted to be purged from storage. No
mechanism currently exists in the DIA Services which defines a
reference to events or processes which, upon occurring, permit the
document to be purged.

The Interchange Document Profile (IDP) is currently used by DIA
Services to describe the characteristics of a document as a whole. By
providing a self-defining field within the IDP which defines multiple
unique documents which contain the definition of events, enterprises
can interchange information as to whether the document may be purged
from storage.

This mechanism  permits an enterprise to convey multiple
references which would permit the document to be purged. Enterprises
can thus define multiple events upon which the retention of a
document can be ascertained.
