Abstract

Disclosed is a program for allowing selective updating from directory to directory. This program eliminates back level code problems. All files on an individual workstation are verified to be current, with a minimum of file transfers (*).

Selective Software Update

Disclosed is a program for allowing selective updating
from directory to directory.  This program eliminates back level code
problems.  All files on an individual workstation are verified to be
current, with a minimum of file transfers (*).

The purpose of this program is to provide a maintenance system
for a group of workstations which have access to a common repository
of computer software and/or data.  The repository could be located on
a LAN server's or mainframe computer's shared media.  The
workstations may have any subset of files found in the shared
repository and files not found in the shared repository.  This
program will determine what files exist in both the shared repository
and on the workstation being updated, and replace any file on the
workstation that has an older creation data than the file with the
same name in the shared repository.

As shown in the figure, for the case where D:\dir1 is the
source and C:\dir2 is the target, programs B, D and E, which exist in
both directories, would be compared.  If the version of the program
in D:\dir1 has a newer creation date than the matching program in
C:\dir2, the program is copied from D:\dir1 to C:\dir2.
