Enhanced Input Edit Masks

Described is an improved technique for performing certain
kinds of editing during data entry.  The technique retrieves editing
information from a file definition and downloads it into memory in a
workstation controller.  The workstation controller handles the
insertion of the editing information onto the display.

Oftentimes data that are entered into a database file must be
formatted using some type of editing information. Examples of such
editing are:  a telephone number entered as (999) 999-9999 with the
parentheses, blank, and hyphen being the special editing; a social
security number entered as 999-99-9999 with the hyphens being the
special editing; numerical data with a decimal point, thousands
separator, or floating currency sign being the special editing.

File definitions on the AS/400 system contain information that
specifies editing values for each field in the file.  These editing
values are typically used when the field is output to make the data
more readable.  Oftentimes these values are useful during data entry
also. They give the user some context of how the value will be used
and the values they are expected to enter.

This invention retrieves the editing information from the file
definition and downloads it to the workstation controller.  The
workstation controller uses the editing information to build the
input field.

In some cases the editing information is displayed as...
