Abstract

This article describes a mechanism for IBM's Document Interchange Architecture (DIA) Services whereby an enterprise can specify and identify a summary about the contents of a document. The Interchange Document Profile (IDP) is currently used by DIA Services to describe the characteristics of a document as a whole. Enterprises can interchange information regarding a summary of a document by providing a self-defining field within the IDP which defines a character string which contains a synopsis of the information contained within the document.

Identifying the Conceptual Abstract for a Document

This article describes a mechanism for IBM's Document
Interchange Architecture (DIA) Services whereby  an enterprise can
specify and identify  a summary about the contents of a document.
The Interchange Document Profile (IDP) is currently used by DIA
Services to describe the characteristics of a document as a whole.
Enterprises can interchange information regarding a summary of a
document by providing a self-defining field within the IDP which
defines a character string which contains a synopsis of the
information contained within the document.

This mechanism permits enterprises to specify and identify
information about the contents of a document in a synoptic format.
This mechanism could aid enterprises in searches and retrieval of
documents by specifying the abstract information as a criterion in a
search or retrieval command for a document.
