Abstract

This article describes a mechanism for IBM's Document Interchange Architecture (DIA) Services whereby an enterprise can associate copyright information to a document. An enterprise may wish to convey copyright information as profile information of the document. Specifying copyright information as document profile information would permit an enterprise to interpret copyright information without examining the contents of the document itself.

Copyright Information Within the Profile of a Document

This article describes a mechanism for IBM's Document
Interchange Architecture (DIA) Services whereby  an enterprise can
associate copyright information to a document. An enterprise may wish
to convey copyright information as profile information of the
document. Specifying copyright information as document profile
information would permit an enterprise to interpret copyright
information without examining the contents of the document itself.

The Interchange Document Profile (IDP) is currently used by DIA
Services to describe the characteristics of a document as a whole.
Enterprises can interchange information regarding the copyrights of a
document by providing a self-defining field within the IDP which
uniquely defines a character string for copyright information and
another field which defines the associated copyright date.

This mechanism permits enterprises which are engaged in the
electronic exchange of information to identify a document or
distribution as copyrighted protected, thereby providing electronic
procedures which are not in violation of copyright laws.
