Notification of Distribution Content Returned

This article describes a mechanism for IBM's Document
Interchange Architecture (DIA) mail distributions whereby an
enterprise can notify an intended recipient of a distribution that
the content of the distribution has been delivered back to the
originator of the distribution.

Current status notifications of distributions can be sent using
the STATUS-LIST command. Providing a self-defining operand for this
command which identifies the originator of a distribution that was
returned and a self-defining field which uniquely identifies the
distribution, an intended recipient can be notified as to where the
distribution was returned.

An enterprise may have the capability to discard a distribution
if the destination enterprise determines the document as being
obsolete or expired. This mechanism permits the intended recipient to
be aware of where the contents of the discarded distribution were
last distributed and may allow the intended recipient to ascertain
the contents of the discarded distribution.
