Returning Contents of Undelivered Distributions

This article describes a mechanism for IBM's Document
Interchange Architecture (DIA) mail distributions whereby an
enterprise can deliver back to an originator the original
distribution if the distribution can not be delivered to the intended
recipient.

No mechanism currently exists in  DIA whereby a recipient's
enterprise can return the contents of the originator's distribution
if the distribution can not be delivered to the destination.

Current notifications of undelivered mail to an originator of
distribution are contained in the Un-Delivered Mail Log Status
Document. By providing a self-defining field within the Un-Delivered
Mail Log Status Document which contains a boolean value which
indicates if the document content are also being returned with the
Un-Delivered Mail Log Status Document, an enterprise can notify the
originator as to whether the original contents have been returned to
the recipient.

This mechanism provides the capability of notifying the
originator if the distribution has been discarded by the destination
enterprise. Using this mechanism permits an originator to discard a
pertinent distribution knowing that if the distribution is not
successfully delivered, the contents would be returned and the
originator would be notified of the returned contents.
