Folded Path Acoustic Attenuator

       This vent cap provides multiple acoustic absorbent
surfaces defining a low back pressure path for air discharged from a
forced air-cooled machine.

      The large air-flow requirement of a fully air-cooled data
processing system presents a need for a compact, yet highly
effective, air vent noise attenuator.  The illustrated vent cap
provides a folded air path in which acoustic foam is provided at the
surfaces impacted by the air as it is directed through that path.

      The drawing shows a cross-section of the vent cap 8, mounted on
a machine cabinet 10.  Air from blower systems 12, 14 within the
cabinet 10 is directed in air flow paths 16 by a baffle system 18,
20, 22, 24, 26 in which the baffle surface 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38,
defining each turn of the air flow path, is covered by a layer of
acoustic foam.  A layer 39 of acoustic form provides additional noise
attenuation within the machine cabinet 10.  The vent cap 8 can be
symmetrical or asymmetrical as shown, about line 40-40, depending on
the ratio of air flow and resulting sound intensity of the blower
systems 12, 14.  The vent cap 8 can have generally circular or
elongated form.  The central portion 42 allows mixing of the air
streams and in effect divides the noise-attenuating action into
successive stages as the air moves through the vent cap 8.  The
