Normalization of FUZOKUGO Linkage in Kana-to-Kanji Conversion

       Disclosed is an algorithm for normalizing multiple
FUZOKUGO (adjunct) linkages following JIRITSUGO (independent word) in
Kana-to-Kanji conversion.  When specified, FUZOKUGO linkages involve
three or more FUZOKUGO elements: this algorithm decides if the
linkages are natural in Japanese or not.

      As in a conventional method, each of the FUZOKUGO elements has
relational information for adjacent elements including a penalty
point on connectability.  Further, an unsuitable linkage table is
provided for providing large penalty points for several sets of
unsuitable or unnatural FUZOKUGO linkages.  Finally, when the total
of the penalty points for specified FUZOKUGO linkages is larger than
a predetermined value, such linkages are determined to be invalid
even if each of the respective linkages between adjacent elements is
not unsuitable.

      For example, it is assumed that FUZOKUGO of TO-KA-RA-DA follows
JIRITSUGO of KO-KO-RO in a phrase.  The algorithm can normalize the
FUZOKUGO linkage as shown in the flow chart.
