Automatic Solder Fountain Workstation

Disclosed is a workstation, in an assembly cell of an
automated manufacturing line, which utilizes a solder fountain to
simultaneously solder all the leads of a multiplicity of print magnet
coils in a wire printer printhead.

Fig. 1 shows a printhead subassembly consisting of Stator Plate
1, carrying Stators 2, assembled with PC Card 3. Print Magnet Coils 4
are slipped over Stators 2 so that Leads 5 extend through Lands 6 in
PC Card 3. There are two versions of this printhead; one with nine
print magnets and a second with eighteen print magnets.

Fig. 2 shows the Solder Fountain Workstation. It is seen that
Printhead Subassembly 7 is brought into the workstation lying flat on
Work Pallet 8 so that previously inserted (loose) Coils 4 are held in
place by gravity. Pick and Place Device 9 descends to pick up
Subassembly 7. Device 9 includes a gripper and coil support block
which has a plate with an elliptical ridge corresponding in shape and
size with the pattern of the coils in Subassembly 7. When this block
is clamped against Subassembly 7, the ridge assures that all the
Coils 4 are properly seated (pushed all the way down) over Stators 2.
Pick and Place Device 9 then moves vertically upwards, then
horizontally to a position over Solder Well 10, then vertically down
to Solder Well 10.  Subassembly 7 is thus transferred to Solder Well
10 where it is located by Post 11. Solder Fountain 12 then pumps
solder...
