Abstract

The "Operator Console Emulation" is the current method being used to replace an operator at the console entering the keystrokes required to test the IBM 9370 Central Electronic Complex (CEC) and then reading the screens displayed to determine the results of the test. An automated method provides consistency of those dreary tasks.

Automated IBM 3270 Operator Console Emulation System

The "Operator Console Emulation" is the current method
being used to replace an operator at the console entering the
keystrokes required to test the IBM 9370 Central Electronic Complex
(CEC) and then reading the screens displayed to determine the results
of the test.  An automated method provides consistency of those
dreary tasks.

Normally an operator's console is channel attached to a CEC via
an IBM 3274 Control Unit and product hardware.

The emulation system provides an operator's console for the
automated test of a CEC, without using an IBM 3274 Control Unit (CU)
and other product hardware.  The only hardware that is used in the
emulation is an IBM Internal Use Only Bus Test Vehicle (BTV) card
which provides the replacement for the CU and product hardware. The
figure shows a mix of the hardware and software that provides the
emulation.  The software (S/W) and the Personal Computer (PC) provide
a console that is operating in Distributed Function Terminal (DFT)
mode.

In the figure, the PC is shown using Disk Operating System
(DOS) S/W with Control Program 8088 (CP88).  This provides a dual
function PC, that of the IBM 9370 Support Processor (SP), as well as
that of an Operator's Console. IBM 3270 Screen Emulation S/W
operating within is unique in that it includes the capability of
receiving and sending data across the Device Cluster Adapter (DCA)
interface as "keystrokes" to the PC and "read screens" from the PC.
