Format Strings Used to Specify Dates/Times

This article addresses a solution to the problem of the
specification of dates and times in countries with different cultural
preferences.

Applications need a means for specifying things such as Dates
and Times in a manner that is totally NLS-enabled allowing cultural
preferences.  Applications need a way to specify the individual
components of Date or Time that will appear (i.e., Month, Day, Year,
Era, Weekday, Hour, minute, etc.), their sequence, their lengths,
their styles (i.e., 03, 3, Mar, March, III), and the individual
separators between, preceding or following each component.  The
method for specifying the cultural preference should be external to
the actual application creating and using the fields.

Use a string containing a series of letters and numbers that
represent individual date/time components (year, month, day, hour,
etc.)  and the text characters that separate, precede or follow them.
Each component field may be fully described as far as style,
justification, length, and whether or not it is an Entry field.  The
string describing the Date or Time field can be kept external to the
application for NLS purposes.  In addition, it is so simple to
specify, individual locations could tailor the Date and Time fields
as desired. The format string should be passed to the Date or Time
control at creation time.  The controls would build the individual
windows for each of the component...
