Flexible Piston

The objectives for heat transfer, tilt conformity and
contact force are accomplished by this device.

The piston is machined from one piece of solid material.  The
flexibility is achieved by cutting a continuous helix along the axis
of the shaft.  This leaves a spiral of material with a substantial
cross section allowing for good thermal transfer while the spaces
between the turns provide for bending and thus allow conformity to
surfaces which are not perpendicular to the axis of the piston.  A
range of contact pressure can be obtained by varying the pitch of the
helix.
