Abstract

Disclosed is a programming technique that allows an IBM 3270 Emulation Program to conserve its memory requirements when extended attributes are not sent in the datastream from the host. A menu item is described which allows the user to enable or disable extended attribute support in the 3270 Emulation Program.

Enable Extended Attribute Support From a Menu

Disclosed is a programming technique that allows an IBM
3270 Emulation Program to conserve its memory requirements when
extended attributes are not sent in the datastream from the host.  A
menu item is described which allows the user to enable or disable
extended attribute support in the 3270 Emulation Program.

Extended attributes (for highlighting, color, and symbol set)
are available only if the communication line is configured for
extended datastream support at the host end. Because extended
attributes do not occupy positions in the display buffer, an
additional buffer (the same size as the display buffer) must be
provided by the 3270 Emulation Program for each of the three types of
extended attributes.

The amount of memory that is therefore needed to support
extended attributes is based on the size of the display buffer and on
which extended attribute types are supported.  If the communication
line is not configured to support extended attributes, it is a waste
of memory resource to allocate the three buffers.

For example, the 3270 Emulation Program needed to conserve its
memory requirements because it can run concurrently with other
applications which also require a certain amount of memory in order
to load and execute.  To conserve on the amount of memory needed, a
new menu item was added to one of its configuration menus.  This menu
item allowed the user to tell the 3270 Em...
