Magnetic Media Receipt Function

       This article describes a system that would perform the
same function as a point-of-sale printer, i.e., provide a customer
with a record of a purchase.  Magnetic Media Receipt (MMR) provides
for a record of a purchase plus additional capability for storing
advertising data, check information, and a large storage area for
consumer data. Currently used printers have the following drawbacks:
      1.   Relatively slow print time
      2.   Noisy
      3.   Expensive
      4.   High maintenance costs
      5.   High consumable costs

      Printed receipts are inconvenient to store for recordkeeping.
Likewise, the receipt is limited in its ability to advertise due to
the long print time necessary to print this type of data.

      A magnetic media receipt can consist of a floppy disk, magnetic
cassette tape, or compact disk as a storage media. This type of media
is small, convenient and can store large amounts of data.  A
point-of- sale system using MMR would incorporate such a device at
each register lane (Fig. 1). The customer would insert his diskette
(CD, cassette, etc.) into the drive and the register would write all
the necessary data to the disk.  This information could include a
minimum of the following:
      1.   Receipt data - itemized data, totals, change, etc.
      2.   Check amount, number
      3.   Advertising data
      4.   Formatting information for displaying advertising
          data

      Time to write this data is about 2 to 5 times faster than that
of today's state-of-the-art printers and usually is less than 2
seconds.  The customer can now take the diskette home and browse all
