Storage of the Capabilities of Frequently Called Facsimile Machines

Disclosed is a means of enhancing facsimile
communications by maintaining a directory of frequently called
numbers and data about the capabilities of the associated facsimile
machines.

In standard facsimile communications, the capabilities of the
receiving machine are queried during connection to the telephone
network to determine what type of files, compression, functions,
etc., the called machine is capable of.  It is then up to the caller
to determine how the transmission should proceed.

The concept disclosed here is that of a facsimile feature in
which the capabilities of other frequently called machines are stored
so that a determination may be made prior to using the telephone
network and incurring charges as to whether or not a particular
transmission can or cannot occur.  For example, if a machine wishes
to send a non-image file, the called machine's capabilities can be
checked off line to determine if it can process such a file.
Additionally, the calling machine could determine the most efficient
means of compression prior to connection and perform that operation
prior to connection to save even more connect time.

The stored list of capabilities is displayable, editable, and
printable.
