       Disclosed is a disk drive breather channel and filter
apparatus for a disk drive enclosure aspirated by pressure
differentials produced by the spinning disks, which improves
particle-free pressure equalization during thermal cycles,
atmospheric changes and external air leakage.

      Disks spinning in a sealed enclosure produce positive and
negative pressure areas.  If a leak in the enclosure occurs in an
area of negative pressure, particle-laden air from the environment
enters the enclosure.  By creating a duct between the lowest pressure
area within the enclosure and ambient, the lowest pressure area
becomes ambient; all other areas within the enclosure rise above
atmospheric condition a corresponding amount.  Due to this positive
pressure, any leakage of the enclosure occurs outward with the
exception of the duct.  If a particulate filter is provided to this
channel, no particles from outside should be able to invade the
enclosure.

      The method of providing this lowest pressure area is shown in
the figure.  First, a non-ventilated disk pack produces a very low
pressure area between the disks 1, somewhat like a stalled
centrifugal pump.  Second, high velocity flow streams have low static
pressure.  By inserting a snorkel 2 between the rotating disks, and
connecting its other end through the shroud 3 to a filter element 4
exposed to the exterior of the file, it is possible equalize the
