Abstract

Disclosed is a tool used to attach the dot elements to a print band by crimping a ring around the neck of the element. As shown in Fig. 1 the dot element 1 is positioned with its neck through a mounting hole in print band 2. Ring 3 is then placed over the neck and crimped. This deforms the ring, forcing it into the narrowed part of the neck, thus firmly attaching the element to the print band.

Print Band Dot Element Crimping Tool

Disclosed is a tool used to attach the dot elements to a
print band by crimping a ring around the neck of the element.  As
shown in Fig. 1 the dot element 1 is positioned with its neck through
a mounting hole in print band 2.  Ring 3 is then placed over the neck
and crimped.  This deforms the ring, forcing it into the narrowed
part of the neck, thus firmly attaching the element to the print
band.

Refer to Fig. 2 which shows schematically the elements of the
present embodiment.  It is seen that print band 2 passes between
crimp mechanism housing 4 and nest 5.  Nest 5 includes multiple
pockets 6 into which dot elements 1 are placed when nest 5 is lowered
to the load position.  When nest 5 is raised to the upper position,
as shown, the neck of each dot element is inserted through a mounting
hole in print band 2.  At this time crimp mechanism housing 4 is in
its raised position permitting ring 3 to be placed on the protruding
neck of element 1 on the upper side of band 2. It is seen that
crimp element housing 4 carries crimping tool 7 supported by mounting
block 8 within bearing 9. Within crimping tool 7 is shaft 10, spring
loaded downward. The actual crimping tool 7 is a standard lathe
collet which is reworked so that when, in the clamping position,
constricted, the inner diameter is slightly less than the finished,
crimped, diameter of ring 3.  It is seen that the taper 11 of the
outer surface of collet 7 is...
