Generic Logical Unit Support for System Network Architecture Services

       Disclosed is an Application Program Interface (API) to
System Network Architecture (SNA) Services that is Logical Unit
(LU)-type-independent.  This interface is at the Path Information
Unit (PIU) level of the SNA protocol stack.  The PIU level is
sufficiently low to allow LU type transparency.

      Generic (i.e., LU-type independent) LU support comprises a
programming interface, a configuration option, and LU registration
commands.  SNA Services provides all Physical Unit (PU) services for
general LUs.  The LU services are the responsibility of the generic
LU application.  The figure illustrates the relationship between SNA
Services and generic LU support.

      The generic LU API is well suited to a stream I/O model
composed of open, close, read, write, ioctl, and wait calls. An
interface processor implements these calls and interfaces to the Path
Control and Configuration Services components of SNA Services.

      Generic LUs are added to the SNA network configuration through
a registration process.  The LU destination addresses are added to a
list associated with the link over which their data will flow.

      Two new commands are added to the Path Control interface to
register and unregister generic LU addresses. Path Control routes all
PIUs for the registered addresses to the interface processor.
