Dual Filter Design for Enclosed Head-Disk Assemblies

       Disclosed is an enclosed head-disk assembly (HDA) design
which has excellent contamination and thermal characteristics.  The
"dual filter HDA" utilizes a closed-loop air system with an internal
air system which cools the integral baseplate.  This design is
applicable to linear actuator designs that use ball bearing
technology.

      Enclosed HDAs are increasingly popular in today's disk drive
marketplace because they save space, cost less and can easily be
upgraded with additional disk drives.  Traditional high-end disk
drives have had external filtering and cooling systems.  Thermal and
filtering modifications were necessary to accommodate the newer
enclosed HDA designs while maintaining the performance and
reliability of previous open-loop systems.

      Linear actuators with ball bearing technology are a major
source of particulate and chemical contamination. Maintenance of a
clean head-disk interface (HDI) is critical to the reliability of
high-end DASD.  The air system in the HDA must ensure that all debris
is filtered before it reaches the HDI.  Rotary actuators also produce
contamination, but a lesser quantity.  Rotary actuators are also
usually used on lower technology disk drives which are less
susceptible to head-disk crashes.

      The HDA air system was designed to overcome the fundamental
problem of actuator contamination flowing to the HDI.  The dual
