Abstract

Disclosed is a method by which a program automatically creates textual code page definition files by extracting the information from two sources: - A character name message file - Binary (programmed) code page definition tables

This text was extracted from an ASCII text file.
This is the abbreviated version, containing approximately 52% of the total text.

Textual Code Page Creation Utility

Disclosed is a method by which a program automatically
creates textual code page definition files by extracting the
information from two sources:
- A character name message file
- Binary (programmed) code page definition tables

This program is called the Code Page File Creation Utility.

Character Name Message File: When one examines the total number
of unique character names used in a typical system which supports
NLS, it is only about 430 (as opposed to about 6400 non-unique
character names).  The fact is there are a lot of characters which
are common to more than one code page (not necessarily at the same
code point).  This invention removes this redundancy from the
language translator (a human) by putting the total number of unique
character names into a single message file called the Character Name
Message File.  Since character names need only be entered once, there
is both a time and an error reduction in using this technique.

Code Page Definition Tables A single set of Code Page
Definition Tables exist internally.  These tables exist in the form
of a program which when compiled becomes the binary input for the
Code Page File Creation Utility.  Externally (after the Code Page
File Creation Utility is run), these tables appear as textual code
page definition files which differ from language to language. This
method provides both a time and and error reduction in the following
ways:
- The maintainer of the internal set of Code Page Definition Tables
does not have to be concerned about language translation.
- The language translator does not have to be concerned about the
code page definition.

Utility creates...
