Process Document Interchange Architecture Commands in a Deferred Mode

This article describes a method for allowing enterprise
users to request that a Document Interchange Architecture command be
processed either synchronously or in a deferred/disconnected mode.

An enterprise user may wish to request that a Document
Interchange Architecture command be processed immediately
(synchronously) and the results returned to the user, or a portion of
the command be performed immediately and the balance of the command
be processed at some later time (asynchronously).  No mechanism prior
to the method of this article exists in the Document Interchange
Architecture to support this function.

This article provides a mechanism whereby an enterprise user
can specify whether the command is to be processed immediately and
the results returned to the user, or whether a portion of the command
is to be performed immediately and the balance of the command is to
be processed at some later time.  This capability is provided by
allowing enterprise users to specify the option in each command via a
new operand.  This new operand is defined in such a way that it may
be specified in either library service or mail service commands. The
default value of this new operand is "not deferred".
