Stereo Display Adapter

       This article describes a stereo display adapter to obtain
the stereo image from the normal display of personal computers or
workstations without modification of its hardware.  For example, the
even frame image corresponds to the right eye image and the odd frame
image, corresponds to the left eye image.

      The adapter 1 (Fig. 1) detects the odd or even image frame
which has the special ID mark 5 to show which frame is displayed now.
This mark could be easily generated by the application software.

      The even/odd ID marks are detected by the two photo-detectors
on the display screen.  Then the odd/even signal is processed to
identify which frame is now displayed on the screen.  The adapter
transmits the infrared signal to receiver 4 on the stereo glasses 2,
and the circuit connected to the glasses controls the liquid crystal
(LC) shutter 3 according to the infrared signal from the adapter.

      Fig. 2 shows the relationship for the mark position (even/odd),
the even and odd frame timing, and the shutter open/close timing.  If
the even frame is displayed, the mark is shown at the right hand side
and the adapter transmits the signal to open the right shutter of the
stereo glasses, and vice versa.

      This stereo system detects the display image directly, and no
special circuit modification is required in the display electronics.
