In-Line High Density Connectors

       This article describes a method and apparatus whereby a
high density interconnect developed for a personal computer (PC)
system MICRO CHANNEL* can be extended to meet the need for a much
higher pin count interconnect using standard connectors with special
T-Bar tooling.

      The drawing shows the apparatus of this disclosure in isometric
view.  Two separate 164(2x82) position connectors 1 and 2 are used
and placed end to end to achieve the desired pin count.  A special
T-Bar manufacturing assembly tool (fixture) 3 maintains the accurate
center- to-center dimensional relationship between connector contacts
(not shown).  The connectors 1 and 2 have molded-in keys 4 and 5,
respectively, approximately in the center of the connector length.
Based on its design and tolerance, this key provides the necessary
printed circuit card contact to connector contact alignment required
for this style of interconnect.  Metal spring retention clips 6, 7, 8
and 9 allow the lateral movement required to fix the two connectors 1
and 2 together accurately from key to key in order to maintain the
card contact to connector contact dimensions needed for the
interconnect to function properly. It also is designed such that it
will retain the connector to the PC planar board through a wave
solder operation.  The T-Bar fixture 3 incorporates two key slots 10
and 11 sized and positioned to locate the keys 4 and 5 from each
connector within the limits...
