Oil Wick for Hot Roll Fusing Unit

Disclosed is a technique to extend the life of an oil
wick, which uses the principle of Mobius bands, used for a hot-roll
type fusing unit in an electrophotographic (EP) printer or an
electrostatic printer

The oil wick is used to wipe the toner on the fusing roll
transferred from a printed paper and to supply silicone oil on the
fusing roll to prevent the toner transfer from the printed paper.  In
the figure, the hot-roll-type fusing unit has fusing roll 1 and
backup roll 2.  The oil wick 3 was set to pass through the guide 4
and to be pressed to the fusing roll 1.  The oil wick 3 is formed
as an endless band,  and may be fed by the feeding rolls 5, 6.  A
joint portion 7 of the oil wick 3 should be treated to be detectable.
The rest of the length of the oil wick 3 is stored in the case
8, and the silicone oil can be refilled by the oil supply unit 9
(detailed figure not shown here).

The oil wick 3 may be made of felt, and its section is formed
square.  The ends of the oil wick 3 are jointed or bonded to each
other in a 90 degree twist so as to form a kind of Mobius band.
As for the joint portion 7, it is treated thinner than the nominal
section, for example, and is detectable by the output change of an
optical sensor 10. In this way, the joint portion of the oil wick can
be controlled so as not to locate on the fusing roll 1 when fed.

In this Mobius band-like twisted oil wick, all of the fo...
