Consider a computer calendar system which provides a printed calendar. While the page for any one day typically shows free and busy time, it is necessary to go to other pages to see free and busy time for future days.

Calendar Busy Bars

       Consider a computer calendar system which provides a
printed calendar.  While the page for any one day typically shows
free and busy time, it is necessary to go to other pages to see free
and busy time for future days.

      A method is provided to show compactly and clearly, future busy
and free time on both day and week calendar pages.  Refer to Fig. 1.
This shows a possible screen for requesting the busy bars on the
printed day calendars. Refer to Fig. 2.  This shows a possible screen
for requesting the busy bars on the printed week calendars. Refer to
Fig. 3.  This shows the day page printed with busy bars.  On the day
calendar, the grid of events already shows the busy time for that
day, so the busy bars, the five lines at the bottom of the page below
the grid frame, shows the busy time for the next five days.  Refer to
Fig. 4.  This shows the week pages printed with busy bars.  The busy
bars on these pages summarize the busy and free time for the days on
the page.  On both the day and week pages, the bold line shows the
busy time and the lack of a line shows free time.

      The method takes these steps:
1. The screens are shown and the user requests busy bars on the day
or week pages or both.
2. When busy bars are requested, the busy and free time is calculated
and encoded into a form used by the page formatting process.
3. The page formatting process prints the page, interpreting the
encoded free/busy time and printi...
