Abstract

Consider a computer calendar system where the user can print the events for a month on one page or two pages. In this form, the boxes for the days are necessarily small. When there are many or long events, the boxes become very full. It is a problem to place event descriptions in the day boxes and maximize the usefulness of the calendar page. If there are many events, printing all lines of each description may fill the box before all events are printed.

Printing One Or All Lines in a 1- Or 2-Page Monthly Calendar

Consider a computer calendar system where the user can
print the events for a month on one page or two pages.  In this form,
the boxes for the days are necessarily small.  When there are many or
long events, the boxes become very full. It is a problem to place
event descriptions in the day boxes and maximize the usefulness of
the calendar page.  If there are many events, printing all lines of
each description may fill the box before all events are printed.

A solution to this problem is to print only the first line of
each event description.  This allows the maximum number of events to
be printed, although printed with abbreviated descriptions.  When
there are few events, or when the full description is more important
to the calendar user than the presence of all events, the solution is
to allow the user to select full or abbreviated descriptions.

Refer to Fig. 2.  This shows a month printed in a one-page
format with one line of description for each event. Refer to Fig. 3.
This shows the same month printed with full descriptions.  Refer to
Fig. 1.  This shows a possible computer terminal screen where the
user can select one-line or full descriptions for the month page.

New to this method are 1) a screen where the user can choose
between "1-line" or "All-line" descriptions, 2) the printing of the
month page according to the choice in 1), and 3) the wrapping of lon...
