Pivoting Flex Band Printer Ribbon Guide

Disclosed is a pivoting means for attachment of a flex
band printer ribbon guide to the ribbon cartridge permitting
strain-free ribbon shifting.

Fig. 1 shows a printer ribbon mechanism in which the ribbon
moves from the cartridge 1, through the flex band guide 2 to the
attached ribbon shield 3 at the print position, and back to the
cartridge.  A ribbon shift mechanism engages the ribbon shield
ratchet 4.  Since the cartridge is rigidly mounted it is apparent
that the vertical motion of the ribbon shield strains the flex band
and stresses the cartridge.  This stress is eliminated by the
disclosed pivoting means.  Fig. 2, Section A-A of Fig. 1, shows pivot
pins 5 attaching flex band guide 2 to cartridge 1.  It is seen that
the bottom end of the pin is a ball joint 6 and that the top
end is captured in slot 7.  It is apparent that when ribbon shield 3
is shifted vertically the motion is transferred to attachment pins 5
which are free to pivot accommodating  this motion, thus permitting
stress-free ribbon shifting.
