Abstract

An enterprise may wish to distribute a document without having the contents converted to a document type if information with the document would be lost during the conversion process. This article describes a mechanism in IBM's Document Interchange Architecture (DIA) by which an originator of a distribution can request that the distributing enterprises do not perform any document content transformations on the original document content of a distribution if there would be a loss of information from the original contents.

Conveying Conversion-With-Loss Prohibition

An enterprise may wish to distribute a document without
having the contents converted to a document type if information with
the document would be lost during the conversion process. This
article describes a mechanism in IBM's Document Interchange
Architecture (DIA) by which an originator of a distribution can
request that the distributing enterprises do not perform any document
content transformations on the original document content of a
distribution if there would be a loss of information from the
original contents.

The Interchange Document Profile (IDP) is currently used by
IBM's DIA Services to describe the characteristics of a document as a
whole.  Enterprises can interchange information as to the request
from the originator for data conversions not to be performed on a
document if information would be lost during the conversion process.
A self-defining field within the IDP which can articulate a value to
represent that a request for prohibiting conversion if information
would be lost during the conversion process is in effect for the
document. By also providing  a self-defining operand on the
REQUEST-DISTRIBUTION which can articulate a value to represent that
the distribution contents are not to be transformed if information
will be lost permits enterprises to convert documents with integrity
that information was not lost during the conversion process. This
mechanism permits an originator of a distri...
