Problem Determination Support Expert System

       Disclosed is a process to:
      1. provide an effective way to transfer diagnostic information
from the development lab to the users (manufacturing, customer
support),
   2. develop an integrated platform for knowledge-based
representations based on the workstation hardware/software
error-handling mechanisms and functional problem determination
specifications, and
 3. enhance the effectiveness of functional isolation capability.

      The electronic components and signals net of the IBM products,
the failure mechanisms, the error checker interpretation, and their
behavior are represented and managed using the hybrid knowledge
representation schemes which consist of a frame and production rule
system.  By using the inheritance property, the scheme provides a
significant amount of automatic reasoning based on the ability to
refer to default and inherited value.  These inferences are usually
provided as part of each assertion and retrieval operation.
Reasoning is provided through context using the 7 procedures in the
figure.  In addition, special- purpose deduction algorithms explore
the structural characteristics of these representations and perform
inferences quickly.
