Abstract

An enterprise may not wish to be notified as to when a distribution can not be delivered. An enterprise may be engaged in the distribution of low priority distributions, in which case, notification that the distribution was not received is irrelevant. Such conditions often exist in enterprises which are engaged in mass distribution of materials, i.e., "junk mail". The cost to engage in servicing massive amounts of undelivered notifications could be significant. This article describes a mechanism in IBM's Document Interchange Architecture (DIA) whereby an originator of a distribution could notify an enterprise that notifications for undelivered distributions are not requested and/or explicitly should not be created.

Suppression of Undelivered Distribution Notifications

An enterprise may not wish to be notified as to when a
distribution can not be delivered. An enterprise may be engaged in
the distribution of low priority distributions, in which case,
notification that the distribution was not received is irrelevant.
Such conditions often exist in enterprises which are engaged in mass
distribution of materials, i.e., "junk mail".  The cost to engage in
servicing massive amounts of undelivered notifications could be
significant.  This article describes a mechanism in IBM's Document
Interchange Architecture (DIA) whereby an originator of a
distribution could notify an enterprise that notifications for
undelivered distributions are not requested and/or explicitly should
not be created.

Within IBM's DIA current characteristics of a distribution are
specified on the ATTRIBUTE-LIST operand of the REQUEST-DISTRIBUTION
command. By creating a self-defining field within the ATTRIBUTE-LIST
operand which identifies that notifications of undelivered
distributions should not be delivered or created provides a mechanism
for notifying enterprises as to how to process distributions which
can not be delivered. This mechanism permits recipients of a
distribution to be notified as to the delivery characteristics
pertaining to undelivered notifications. This mechanism reduces the
amount of system overhead for enterprises that requires that
correlation entries be maintained until not...
