Easy-to-Update Hardware Library Design

Disclosed is a design for a library of related hardware
manuals that reduces the cost of updating the library.  This design
puts common information for the system units into a single manual.

This library design puts the common maintenance analysis
procedures, service request code information, parts information,
adapter information and device information together.  The system unit
specific information is in a manual that ships only with that system
unit.

The present method of producing and updating system unit
manuals is to produce an operator and service manual for each type
system unit. When a new feature or device is released, a Technical
Newsletter (TNL) is produced for each manual.  Most of the time, the
information for a new feature, such as an adapter or disk drive, is
the same for each type system unit.  This means multiple TNLs with
the same information in them.

This design puts this COMMON information into one manual.  The
version number of this COMMON manual is the same as the version
number of the diagnostic programs, since the diagnostic programs must
be changed to test the new features.

The information SPECIFIC to one type of system unit is in a
manual shipped with that system unit (such as removals, locations and
system unit specific parts).  This information remains constant over
a longer period of time.  If it needs to be updated because of a
design change,...
