Dual-Axis Positioning System

       Disclosed is dual motion/single-drive positioning system.
This design, using only a single rotary positioning table, will
result in both a radial and axial movement without the need for a
second motor drive or its associated hardware.

      This assembly will operate as a standard rotary table when
locknut 4 is tight.  This locknut secures the external cylinder 1 to
the internal cylinder 2.  The tapered locknut and slotted portion of
the external cylinder works on the same principle as the collet of a
drill.

      Axial motion is attained by loosening the locknut. This frees
the internal cylinder from the external cylinder and rotary motor 5.
The internal cylinder clamp 3 is then engaged to hold the internal
cylinder from any rotary motion.  The motor is then energized turning
the external cylinder about the internal cylinder at their mating
threads 6.  The resultant is the axial motion of the internal
cylinder.

      When the desired axial position of the system is reached, the
internal cylinder clamps are opened and the locknut is secured.
Rotary positioning of the system is again possible.
