Disclosed is a method for thermoformed plastic packaging with perforated break-away sections.  Benefits include improved functionality.

Background

      Conventional thermoformed packaging designs are heat staked or ultrasonically welded together and difficult to open. A limited amount of weld points and large sidewalls are available for the consumer to grab onto while prying the thermoform apart.  As a result, consumers use a sharp object to cut the package open, risking damage to the components from the sharp object. Additional risk occurs from dropping the components when the package opens.

Description

      The disclosed method is a thermoformed container that can be easily opened due to having perforations. The consumer can break open the package and remove the chip/heatsink. The package is destructible so the opened thermoform cannot be reused, reducing counterfeiting efforts.

              The perforations occur along the corners of the deepest cavities. These perforations weaken the appropriate area of the material without compromising the integrity of the protective features. The product breaks free when the consumer applies pressure to the top of the thermoform. No knife or scissors are required, reducing the risk of damage to the components (see Figure 1).
