Disclosed is a method for a tool that enables one to insert or remove a Land Grid Array (LGA) package from a socket without damaging the socket’s contacts or housing. Benefits include eliminating the need to center the package.

Background

Currently, inserting the LGA package into the socket is a manual process where one’s fingers hold the package in place until it is visually centered, then the package is released; however, this process can damage the socket’s contacts or housing.

General Description

The disclosed method is a tool that enables one to insert or remove a Land Grid Array (LGA) package from a socket without damaging the socket’s contacts or housing. It contains a fixture that locates itself quickly and precisely, without interfering with the socket contacts. A handle moves the package vertically to account for any variation in stack up heights (see Figure 1). A vacuum pen holds the package during the process of insertion and removal with a suction cup that grabs on to the heat spreader on the package. The vacuum pen has a release button to drop the package into the socket cavity (see Figure 2). The package is always inserted and removed with a vertical motion, so the package does not get caught up in the contacts.
