Voice Coil Design

       Disclosed is a voice coil design that allows stacking
closely in one direction.

      In order to build a machine that can punch small holes close
together (.005 inch diameter on .010 inch centers) on a strip of
material six inches wide, there is a need for as many as 640 punches
that are independently programmed.

      Present voice coil punch designs are .5 inch square, thus only
12 punches can be put in a single row.  With the disclosed design, a
printed circuit voice coil 1 can be designed to be rectangular.
Present calculations show that a voice coil .2 inch thick can be
built, thus putting 30 punches on a six-inch-wide strip.  This design
has been built for disk drive actuators and can be applied to
material punches, as shown by 3.  The printed circuit voice coil
punches can easily be assembled very accurately center to center
using a slotted holder 2.
