Fabric Printer Ribbon With Improved Yield

This invention is used in fabric printer ribbon
cartridges typically used in impact printers to greatly improve the
character yield of the ribbon.  It is a means of renewing the amount
of ink on the fabric which uses a new way to re-ink the fabric.

Typically, fabric ribbons are re-inked by means of a porous
wheel that is saturated with ink.  The wheel is pressed up against
the fabric and, with time, dispenses ink to the fabric to replenish
the supply of ink used for printing.  This increases the character
yield of the fabric ribbon.  However, the wheels are expensive and
difficult to manufacture.  Also, the wheels do not deliver 100% of
the ink and so suffer from inefficiency.  Because of this, the wheels
tend to be large.

In this invention, the wheel is replaced with a bag or
reservoir which contains the liquid ink.  A small hole or group of
holes is provided in the bag.  The bag is pressed up against the
ribbon.  The ink is squeezed through the holes to replenish the
fabric.

This presents several advantages over wheels because the ink is
delivered to the area of the fabric that actually does the printing,
namely the center.  The dispensing hole or holes can be covered with
a patch of porous material engineered to deliver the ink at a
controlled diffusion rate.  Also, the ribbon cartridge can be fitted
with a means of squeezing the bag in a controlled manner to "pump"
the ink...
