A programming method is disclosed that allows engineering graphics to be accurately displayed interactively on low function graphics devices. Using existing plotting routines, a selected drawing is accurately plotted to a generic intermediate file. The file is then displayed using device-independent graphics software.

Engineering Graphics Access And Display System

       A programming method is disclosed that allows engineering
graphics to be accurately displayed interactively on low function
graphics devices.  Using existing plotting routines, a selected
drawing is accurately plotted to a generic intermediate file.  The
file is then displayed using device-independent graphics software.

      In a typical embodiment of this method, the program would be
divided into separate modules for handling the tasks specified above.

      One module would be responsible for interacting with the user
to obtain a specification of the drawing to be displayed.  Selection
aids would be incorporated into this module, allowing the user to
search through the engineering database.  A typical database would
consist of CADAM drawings, for example.

      Once a drawing is selected, a second module would use the
drawing systems' plotting routines to create an accurate intermediate
graphic file.  This module would, for example, plot a CADAM drawing
into a generic GDDM graphic file.

      A third module would be responsible for displaying the drawing
immediately after the file is created.  This module would provide a
variety of functions for viewing the drawing (e.g., panning, zooming,
rotation).

      The complete system allows a user to interactively select and
view accurate representations of engineering drawings.
