Abstract

A Write Single Structured Field (WSSF) display data stream command has been architected for the IBM 5250 data entry terminal to allow structured fields to be intermixed with traditional data processing commands. The WSSF command removes the restriction that structured fields be located at the end of the data stream SNA chain. This enables applications to position structured field commands logically within the 5250 display data stream.

Write Single Structured Field Data Stream Command

A Write Single Structured Field (WSSF) display data
stream command has been architected for the IBM 5250 data entry
terminal to allow structured fields to be intermixed with traditional
data processing commands.  The WSSF command removes the restriction
that structured fields be located at the end of the data stream SNA
chain.  This enables applications to position structured field
commands logically within the 5250 display data stream.

Some 5250 display data stream commands use the structured field
format.  The work station controller (WSC) processes the structured
fields and assumes that each structured field is in the format
described in Fig. 1.

Structured fields provide increased architectural flexibility.
New functions can easily be added to a structured field by creating
new minor structures or extending the major structure length.  These
types of changes will not affect existing applications that use the
unenhanced version of that structured field.

The 5250 WSSF command ('F4'X) must follow a 5250 Escape
character ('04'X), and is followed by a single structured field, as
illustrated in Fig. 2.

The 5250 WSSF command is allowed in DP mode only.  The 5250
WSSF command and its associated structured field can be positioned at
the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of the display data
stream SNA chain.  If not positioned at the end of the data stream,
the 525...
