Abstract

A Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) Connector Handtool provides a means to join a flex cable and a ZIF connector quickly and effectively. The handtool may be used to open a ZIF connector, securely lock a ZIF connector and ensure a reliable electrical contact has been made, and access a ZIF connector located in a densely populated space.

Zero-Insertion-Force Connector Handtool

A Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) Connector Handtool provides
a means to join a flex cable and a ZIF connector quickly and
effectively.  The handtool may be used to open a ZIF connector,
securely lock a ZIF connector and ensure a reliable electrical
contact has been made, and access a ZIF connector located in a
densely populated space.

The design of the ZIF Connector Handtool (see Fig. 1) consists
of:
      -  a flat rectangular body
      -  a flat shelf
      -  two protruding prongs

The two prongs are used to help an assembler properly align the
tool with the ZIF connector and lift the top of the ZIF to unlock the
connector.  The flat shelf provides additional support for lifting
the top of the ZIF, preventing an uneven load which could cause
destructive bending or inadvertent closing of the ZIF.  The shelf is
also used to press down on the top of the ZIF when closing the
connector, again providing an even load distribution while securely
locking the connector.  The flat body is used by the assembler as a
handle while lifting, holding open, and lowering the top of the ZIF.
In addition, the body covers nearby components preventing accidental
damage or incorrect connections during the operation.

The ZIF Connector Handtool is used in the manufacturing process
as follows:
1.  Guide the tool with one hand to the ZIF connector, using the two
prongs to align properly the tool...
