Articulating Control Panel

       A method for hinging an operator panel is disclosed.  An
operator panel is made to hinge to allow the removal of electronic
devices that reside behind it.

      A control panel on a computer was made to articulate in order
to allow the devices to be removed and inserted.  Fig. 1 depicts the
important parts of the design, and Fig. 2 shows the panel in the
closed position which is also the most typical.  The control panel
assembly is made up of three parts:  control panel 1, extension link
2, and the mounting bracket 3.  The control panel 1 can be opened and
closed with one hand, and no tools are required.

      The control panel 1 is a two-part plastic shell which houses
the control panel circuit board and power switch. Molded into the
control panel 1 are two of the four positioning springs 4 that are
necessary to lock the panel into either the open or closed position.
One spring is located on the top of the control panel 1 and the other
is located on the bottom.  The remaining two springs are located on
the mounting bracket  3.

      The extension link 2 is a one-piece molded plastic part that
integrates some major features of the design.  There are four
positioning stops 5 molded into the link 2 which are designed to
locate the positioning spring 4 such that the control panel 1 can be
positioned into either an open or closed position.  In addition, two
