Merchandise Processing Flow Method

       Disclosed is a flow of processing merchandise in a retail
environment characterized by highly seasonal demand satisfied with an
unskilled, temporary labor force. Merchandise processing in a
distribution center typically has slack time due to the delays
inherent in a batch- oriented information system.  The disclosed
solution realigns physical flow and product flow in a real-time
tracking and control system.

      The physical flow in the checker-marker area becomes one where
a workcell enables a group of workers to use coded, labelled cartons
(see figure).

      Physical Flow - DISTRIBUTION CLERK - (unskilled)
      -    Clerk pulls next available carton onto workstation.
      -    Scan or Wand employee ID for labor data collection and an
audit trail.
      -    Scan or Wand carton ID.
      -    Open carton.
      -    Remove inner-packs or other packaging material.
      -    Position merchandise by style/color/size.
      -    Move to RETAILER/CHECKER.

      Physical Flow - RETAILER/CHECKER - (skilled)
      -    Scan carton number.
      -    Scan or Wand store number from menu sheet.
      -    Verify (from screen) that the purchase order (PO)
displayed is the PO on the carton.
      -    Count the merchandise.
      -    Key enter count/assortment onto displayed PO.
