Abstract

Disclosed is a dynamic process for relating a prompted interface to the display of SQL statements. SQL is a difficult language to master. Prompted interfaces have helped to simplify the user interface to a large degree. However, prompted interfaces often limit the amount of the SQL language constructs supported. Therefore, it is still necessary that the user population wishing to use these complex constructs be able to easily learn the SQL language. In the past, functions have been available to statically display the associated SQL command in a pop-up window based on a user request. However, the user was not able to change the prompted interface until the pop-up window was removed. This still caused the user to have to somehow relate the different parts of the SQL command to the prompted interface.

language to master.  Prompted interfaces have helped to simplify the
user interface to a large degree. However, prompted interfaces often

      The components of the visual SQL interface are displayed in a
window as the primary focus of the user's attention.  If the user
chooses to display the SQL command, it is displayed in another window
that overlays the primary window.  The user may continue to interact
with the visual interface.  The SQL command window is dynamically
updated as the user interacts with the visual interface.  The area in
the SQL command window that was last changed in the visual interface
