Hybrid Dial/Slider Icon

Disclosed is a graphic control icon which resembles a
dial but also slides right and left to provide additional function in
a single graphic symbol. This consolidation of function may be useful
because it provides a more intuitive symbol than separate icons.

The icon will get larger or smaller in proportion to "value"
indicated with the dial.  This provides a quick at-a-glance indicator
to the user.  Note that this function would be in addition to the
right-left movement of the positioning of the dial.  Considering the
increasing use of X-windows, multi-menu graphic displays, and other
complicated software interfaces, novel icons may enhance a user's
ability to use a product or monitor the functioning of lab automation
software.

Other applications include audio applications (e.g., for PC
usage, radio, hi-fi) where the dial setting represents volume and the
dial positioning represents tone. In another audio application the
dial can represent amplitude of the sine wave and the dial
positioning (on the screen) of the frequency.  For color graphics
applications, the dial setting controls luminance (intensity), the
dial positioning (up/down) controls wavelength, and the dial
positioning (right/left) controls purity.  For vector quantities, the
dial setting controls magnitude and dial positioning controls
direction.  The icon may also be useful for complex number
manipulation.  For manipulation in CADAM, the dial affects rotation
in X, Y or Z.  Slider affects translation.
