Flying Height Tester Tools for Head/Arm Assembly

       Two production tools employed in the assembly of
dual-head arms for magnetic disk files are described.  Both relate to
manufacturing tests of the flying height of heads.

      The mounting post is a fixture which simplifies manual handling
and reduces debris.  The Flying Height Tester Fixture employs a
rotating mechanism for inverting dual-head arm assemblies to present
the opposite head to the disk without demounting.

      Mounting Post:

      A mounting post 1 (Fig. 1) of circular cross section is used to
mount a head arm assembly 2 through a circular hole 3 in the arm that
fits over post 1 to a predetermined depth set by a location spacer 6.
A metallic ring 4 reduces debris from mounting wear.  When so
mounted, a single assembly can be more easily fitted on a fixture
used for fly height testing.

      Improved positioning of the arm assembly is due to less
clearance being required between the hole in the arm and the mounting
post.  The head/arm assembly 2 may be lowered on to the post 1 at a
slight angle 5 without jamming or removing material from the head/arm
assembly thus reducing down time due to material build up on the post
1.  The height of engagement with the hole 3 in the arm may be easily
set by using the required length of spacer 6.  This mounting post
reduces the pick up of aluminum debris, reducing costly breaks in
production for cleaning up.
