Expand 8086/80186 MPU's Memory Limit to 16 Megabytes

       This article defines a method for expanding the memory
range of an Intel 80186 from 1 megabyte to 16 megabytes.

      Intel designed its 8086 and 80186 MPUs with addressing for 1
megabyte of memory.  This design is to increase the memory addressing
to 16 megabytes.

      Refer to the figure for a diagram of address formation. The new
idea is to take the 16-bit segment register 2 and add it to 8 bits
of zero concatenated with the upper 8 bits of the offset register 1
using a 16-bit adder 3.  The result is a 24-bit address 4 with a
range of 16 megabytes.
