Abstract

Support for the auto-clear entry field function on a non-programmable terminal is disclosed. The auto-clear function causes default entry field data to be cleared when the user modifies the first character of that field. An enhanced work station controller provides this auto-clear function when specified by a system application program. By automatically clearing default field data during initial field data entry, usability and end user productivity of entry field data replacement are improved.

Auto-Clear Entry Field On Non-Programmable Work Station

Support for the auto-clear entry field function on a
non-programmable terminal is disclosed.  The auto-clear function
causes default entry field data to be cleared when the user modifies
the first character of that field.  An enhanced work station
controller provides this auto-clear function when specified by a
system application program.  By automatically clearing default field
data during initial field data entry, usability and end user
productivity of entry field data replacement are improved.

An auto-clear entry field is automatically cleared of default
text when the user modifies the first character in the field.  An
enhanced work station controller (WSC) will support the programmable
work station (PWS) model of the auto-clear entry field, as defined in
Common User Access Panel Design and User Interaction, IBM Publication
SC26- 4351-0, First Edition, dated December 1987.

Fig. 1 illustrates the flow of display panel data between an
application program and a non-programmable terminal (NPT).  The host
display data manager builds a physical data stream representation of
the display panel and passes it to the WSC for presentation.  The WSC
controls the physical attachment of multiple NPT devices.  Each NPT
device consists of a keyboard and display monitor and has limited
processing capability.
