Abstract

Delivery of important system information from system support to the user community is a continuing problem. System log messages, operator messages, bulletin boards, and online system news viewing facilities handle many communications requirements, but it is sometimes desirable to send a note directly to the users reader or PROFS in-basket. Unfortunately, unrestricted use of notes on a node with large numbers of users can result in disastrous consequences, such as filling the spool space or exceeding the maximum spool count. A facility was needed to deliver notes to users in a controlled and safe manner.

Controlled Use of Notes for Information Delivery

Delivery of important system information from system
support to the user community is a continuing problem. System log
messages, operator messages, bulletin boards, and online system news
viewing facilities handle many communications requirements, but it is
sometimes desirable to send a note directly to the users reader or
PROFS in-basket. Unfortunately, unrestricted use of notes on a node
with large numbers of users can result in disastrous consequences,
such as filling the spool space or exceeding the maximum spool count.
A facility was needed to deliver notes to users in a controlled and
safe manner.

The ATTENT Notification Handler provides facilities for
creation, delivery, and expiration of notices to users on VM nodes.
ATTENT monitors spool usage and delivers notices in throttled bursts
during safe spool levels.  Notices are automatically sent to users in
either PROFS or CMS format and the delivery of notices is recorded
for each user.

ATTENT supports creation of notices under a set of notice
categories.  ATTENT administrators can create notices with a
specified lifetime and ATTENT will deliver from the specified start
date to the specified end date.   A user interface is provided to
allow the user to select the categories to which he is to receive
notices and the format of those notices (i.e., PROFS or CMS note).
Notices may be selectively enabled or disabled for delivery.
