Abstract

This article describes a knowledge-based tool which integrates with the OfficeVision electronic mail system and provides automated intelligent mail processing for the user. Smartmail is a rule-based expert system which uses rules defined by a user to perform routine processing of mail in the user's in-basket. With each item of new mail, the Smartmail system examines information on the envelope and may search the content of the mail item for keywords and phrases. This information is compared to a set of rules to determine how to process each item of mail.

Smartmail Knowledge-Based System for the Officevision Desktop

This article describes a knowledge-based tool which
integrates with the OfficeVision electronic mail system and provides
automated intelligent mail processing for the user. Smartmail is a
rule-based expert system which uses rules defined by a user to
perform routine processing of mail in the user's in-basket.  With
each item of new mail, the Smartmail system examines information on
the envelope and may search the content of the mail item for keywords
and phrases.  This information is compared to a set of rules to
determine how to process each item of mail.

Smartmail can perform most of the processing activities that
are normally done by a secretary.  For example, Smartmail can sort
mail into predefined categories and file mail items into the
appropriate folders.  Smartmail could assign mail a priority rating
based on user- defined criteria.  In some situations, Smartmail could
forward mail to other users or to a distribution list, Smartmail
could send some mail items to a printer and even discard some items
of mail.  All of the actions would be controlled by the processing
rules defined by the user.

The OfficeVision desktop provides a basic set of tools with
which a user can store, retrieve and display information.  The
Smartmail knowledge-based system enhances the base Office platform by
providing a means of performing automated intelligent processing for
a user.  By hav...
